New capabilities in Socialcast will offer additional ways for companies to improve collaboration and communication to collectively achieve organizational goals.

VMware Socialcast® – New integrated feature will introduce a better approach to the collection and management of ideas in large organizations, helping troubleshoot problems and improve organizational performance.

  • Socialcast Challenges – Offers an ideation workspace that will provide organizations with a simple and social way to turn ideas into action. Unlike specialized or add-on ideation tools, Socialcast Challenges is designed as an integral part of an organization’s Socialcast community, giving employees a powerful way to brainstorm, prioritize actions, and solve problems collaboratively. By providing a structured way to tap into an organization’s collective wisdom, Socialcast Challenges will help improve business outcomes.

For enterprises to truly become mobile-first organizations and support the fast pace that the new world of mobile working requires, they need a new level of flexibility and agility in the back-end infrastructure,” said Brett Waldman, research manager, IDC. “VMware is painting an attractive picture of this new ‘everything is virtualized and cloud-enabled’ infrastructure.”

Internap and Aerospike Announce Integrated Solution for Accelerated Big Data Performance

Turnkey Solution Combines Best-of-Breed NoSQL Database and Bare-Metal Cloud into Pre-Configured “Fast Big Data” Platform to Deliver Personalized Interactions in Real Time

internap

ATLANTA – November 6, 2013 Internap Network Services Corporation (NASDAQ: INAP), a provider of high-performance hosting services, and Aerospike, provider of a flash-optimized, in-memory NoSQL database, today announced an integrated solution that creates the industry’s first “fast big data” platform by offering Aerospike’s leading NoSQL database on Internap’s AgileSERVER bare-metal cloud. The combined solution enables developers to quickly deploy applications that demand predictable, high performance in a cost-effective hosted environment. As a result, customers in a range of industries are empowered to make better decisions, faster, by ingesting, storing and analyzing terabytes of data from billions of transactions.

The joint Internap-Aerospike “fast big data” solution combines Internap’s high performance bare-metal cloud – which can deliver up to eight times better server performance over virtualized alternatives – with a pre-configured installation of Aerospike’s flash-optimized, in-memory NoSQL database. Built atop best-of-breed hardware, including high-end solid-state drives (SSDs) and direct attached storage, the scalable, turnkey solution processes and delivers massive amounts of data within milliseconds. For use cases requiring high-bandwidth network connectivity among clustered servers, 10 Gigabit Ethernet to the server is available as an optional add-on.

As part of the joint solution, qualified customers of Aerospike’s free Community Edition can access a two-week free trial of Internap’s bare-metal cloud to test drive the performance difference before purchase.

eXelate Reaps Benefits of Internap-Aerospike Solution

One of the early customers to benefit from the joint Internap-Aerospike solution is eXelate, the smart data company that powers digital marketing decisions worldwide for agencies, platforms, and publishers. eXelate runs Aerospike databases on Internap bare-metal cloud servers with direct attached SSDs in four Internap data centers around the world. Data is synchronized across Internap’s high-bandwidth networks via Aerospike cross-data center replication. The Aerospike-Internap combination enables eXelate to provide its customers with 8,000 distinct segments of demographic, behavioral and purchase intent data on more than 700 million consumers within strict, 100-millisecond service-level agreements (SLAs), cost-effectively and with 100% uptime.

As a global big data provider delivering insights that enable digital advertisers to make smarter marketing decisions, we sought a real-time, low-latency cloud platform and a NoSQL database that could deliver reliable data across our global footprint at a reasonable cost to meet massive scale demands of between six to seven billion events per day,” said Elad Efraim, chief technology officer and co-founder, eXelate. “Combining the cost-effective, high performance of Internap’s bare-metal cloud and Aerospike’s NoSQL database, we were able to accomplish programmatic scaling of our infrastructure to support one trillion real-time data transactions monthly for more than 200 marketers and publishers worldwide – giving us an edge to compete in today’s high-speed, data-driven Internet economy.”

Fast Big Data Meets Bare-Metal Cloud

Aerospike is recognized by Gartner, Inc. in the “Visionaries” quadrant of the Magic Quadrant for Operational Database Management Systems1 published on October 21, 2013, and it is the user profile store of choice for many of today’s largest online advertising and digital marketing platforms. Implemented in some of the industry’s most data-intensive environments, the Aerospike database is used by customers to personalize consumer interactions across multiple channels, including the web, mobile, search, video, social, gaming and online retail. These revenue-generating, big data-driven applications rely on Aerospike to rapidly read and write user context in order to deliver the most relevant response – faster than the blink of an eye and with zero downtime.

The Aerospike database is designed to meet the needs of a new class of Internet-scale applications that must personalize consumer interactions based on what customers are doing with their devices right now,” said Srini V. Srinivasan, Aerospike founder and vice president of engineering and operations. “Our integrated solution with Internap’s bare-metal cloud will ease time to market for our customers and allow them to operate at speed and scale twice as cost effectively as they could with virtualized public cloud offerings.”

For applications prone to dynamic traffic patterns that also require the highest levels of performance, reliability and control, Internap’s AgileSERVER bare-metal cloud combines the reliability and performance of dedicated (single-tenant) servers with the convenience and agility of virtualized, multi-tenant public cloud offerings. Internap’s bare-metal cloud supports big data applications better than virtualized cloud alternatives by delivering faster throughput and processing, more consistent performance by removing the “noisy neighbor effect” and more efficient price to performance – with up to 50% cost savings over nominal virtual equivalents.

Aerospike’s industry-leading, low-latency NoSQL database is the perfect complement to our bare-metal cloud, because it helps expand our solutions into growth markets demanding faster data and decisions to drive better business,” Gopala Tumuluri, vice president of hosted services at Internap. “Internap has always been focused on optimizing performance, and together with Aerospike, we are positioned to support customers across a range of industries requiring massive database scale for demanding big data applications to turn insight into action.”

IBM to Acquire Aspera to Help Companies Speed Global Movement of Big Data

New Capabilities Allow Organizations To Reduce Transfer Time For Large Data Files From Hours To As Little As Seconds

ARMONK, N.Y. – 19 December 2013: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced a definitive agreement to acquire Emeryville, CA-based Aspera, Inc. Aspera’s technology helps companies securely speed the movement of massive data files around the world. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Licensed to clients and partners either in the cloud or on premise, Aspera’s high-speed transfer technology reduces transmission times for large files or data sets by up to 99.9 percent – potentially cutting a 26 hour transfer of a 24 gigabyte file, sent halfway around the world, down to just 30 seconds.  Aspera’s patented fasp™ technology overcomes inherent bottlenecks in broadband wide area networks that slow the transfer of extremely large files, such as high-definition video or scientific research files, over distance.

Companies today are struggling to manage increasing volumes of structured and unstructured data created by everything from sensors to social media. They must accelerate the velocity of sending and receiving this data to improve competitiveness in a variety of ways – including the ability to more quickly uncover valuable business insights, bring products to market faster and improve employee productivity. This becomes even more critical with the growing adoption of cloud computing, where companies need a more effective way to transport extremely large files to and from cloud platforms. Aspera moves Big Data to, from and within the cloud faster than traditional methods while providing security, bandwidth control and predictability.

Aspera solutions solve data transfer problems across numerous industries and scenarios such as:

·        Life sciences organizations sharing genomic data in the quest to find the next medical breakthrough;
·        Media companies shortening production cycles or uploading hit television shows and blockbuster movies to popular consumer streaming services;
·        Gaming companies receiving the latest software build from third party developers to enable rapid game development;
·        Any individual within an enterprise trying to share and synchronize large files over distance between multiple devices such as a laptop, mobile phone or tablet.

Our experience working with thousands of clients on Big Data projects tells us that companies can better compete and win when they can quickly extract value from massive volumes of data,” said John Mesberg, Vice President, B2B and Commerce Solutions, IBM. “With this acquisition, IBM addresses a key challenge for globally integrated enterprises by allowing them to move large data files much faster to the individuals who need them, wherever in the world they may be.”

Our team has redefined how the world’s biggest data can be moved quickly, securely and reliably around the world,” said Michelle Munson, president and co-founder, Aspera. “By tapping into IBM’s innovative capabilities and global resources, we will solve ever expanding data movement challenges for our customers now and in the future.”

Aspera advances the transfer of large files where traditional network protocols limit speed and reliability. Typical data transfers over TCP/IP are hampered by network delays or packet loss, even over the fastest broadband networks. Aspera’s fasp protocol delivers the industry’s fastest transmission speeds over any network link regardless of file size, transfer distance or network conditions. Aspera ensures secure encryption of the files in transit or at rest.

By combining Aspera with the power of cloud computing, customers have a practical way to transport big data files to and from the cloud. Aspera makes cloud computing even faster, more predictable and more cost effective for big data transfers such as enterprise storage backup, sharing virtual images or bursting to the cloud for increased computing capacity. Its fasp technology is licensed to many leading cloud computing services and will be integrated with IBM’s recently acquired SoftLayer cloud infrastructure later next year.

This acquisition builds on IBM’s Smarter Commerce initiative by allowing businesses to accelerate their digital supply chains between partners and suppliers. This also extends IBM’s market-leading capabilities in Managed File Transfer with a complementary set of capabilities to help enterprises further gain control and oversight of their data transfers.

Aspera recently received an Emmy® award for Outstanding Achievement in Engineering Development in recognition of its fasp protocol. The academy commented that fasp is an “an industry game changer” used by “virtually all the major broadcast television networks, Hollywood studios and CG/animation houses.”

The acquisition of Aspera is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the first quarter 2014.

Big Data as an enterprise initiative is beginning to gain momentum. Half of the respondents are in the process of implementing or are likely to implement a big data solution and an additional 12% have already deployed a big data project. These individuals estimate that their organization will spend an average of $8 million on big data initiatives over the next year. In turn, business management, particularly the CEO, is leading the charge on the need for big data strategies. Business leadership is looking to IT management to build the necessary strategies to utilize big data based on company goals. Once implemented, IT executives play a key role in capturing, storing, searching/storing, sharing, analyzing and visualizing data.

There are numerous goals driving big data investment, particularly, improving the quality of decision-making (59%), increasing the speed of decision-making (53%), improving planning and forecasting (47%), developing new products/services and revenue streams (47%), and new customer acquisition/customer retention (44%). When measuring the value of those investments the top success factors considered critical or very important are: identifying areas and processes where big data can have the greatest impact (81%); making sure human capital exists to effectively extract value from big data initiatives (72%); and identifying the best big data tools or resources that will integrate with legacy infrastructure (70%).

IDG-BigDataThe potential benefits from analyzing data are limitless and three quarters of organizations predict that big data will be in mainstream use within the next three years,” said Matthew Yorke, CEO, IDG Enterprise. “It is not surprising that 70% of enterprise organizations are investing in big data, compared to 56% of SMB organizations. Some of the biggest winners in this, within enterprise organizations, will be marketers who partner with IT to better understand their customer data, activities and drivers.”

Current and future investments are focused on two areas for the majority of organizations, storage (55% currently and 49% plan to increase investments in the next 1-3 years) and servers (53% and 47% respectively). However, respondents anticipate a jump in cloud infrastructure investments over the next three years (26% and 44% respectively). Additionally, organizations are investing in data analytics (52%), data mining (42%) and data visualization (36%) to gain business value.

Big Data Adoption and Security Challenges

Although organizations are investing in big data, budget limitations are considered the biggest challenge, followed by limited availability of skilled employees to manage and analyze big data and security. Enterprise organizations are also facing business process and organizational culture issues in big data adoption.

Skill sets are a key challenge because organizations are looking for individuals with specialized expertise. The majority of organizations currently employ database programmers, business analysts and data analysts in house. In the next 12-18 months, organizations will be hiring data scientists, data analysts, data architects and data visualizers.

Organizations have an increased confidence that their existing security solutions provide adequate security for big data, however that does not mean that precautions are not taken. More than half restrict or limit access to sensitive big data (52%) and encrypt sensitive data (43%). Another precaution is to house sensitive data on premises (62%), versus in the cloud.

Vendor Requirements

At this time, half of the respondents do not see a clear leader in big data solutions and only 43% believe that the big data vendors they work with are effective in helping them define the value big data provides to their organization. Organizations believe that vendors are able to scale solutions to their organization accordingly, however find solutions inadequate when it comes to integrating them into existing solutions, ease of use and understanding pricing models.

The IT leaders driving big data investments are looking to vendor partners to help prove the business case for investment,” continued Yorke. “Vendors that can demonstrate how their solution will help them monetize their data through improved decision-making capabilities and metrics, and provide best practices will be seen as the more valuable partner.”

AlgoSec Partners With Qualys Allowing Organizations to Manage Security Risks in a Business Context

AlgoSec

New Integration Delivers Application-Centric Vulnerability Management, Aggregating and Scoring Vulnerabilities Based on Risk and Continuously Monitoring for Changes Within Data Center Environments

BOSTON, MA–(Marketwired – Feb 19, 2014) – AlgoSec, the market leader for Security Policy Management and Qualys, Inc. (NASDAQ: QLYS), a pioneer and leading provider of cloud security and compliance solutions, today announced their partnership to enable businesses to manage security and risk across their organizations. With the partnership, the latest version of the AlgoSec Security Management Suite includes integration with QualysGuard Vulnerability Management (VM) to aggregate and score vulnerabilities associated with data center applications and their associated physical or virtual servers. This provides customers with unprecedented visibility into the risk levels of data center applications — even as they change — enabling IT and security teams to effectively communicate with business stakeholders so they can “own their risk” by quickly taking the actions needed to mitigate IT security issues.

Good risk management influences business decision making, so risks should always be addressed in a business context,” wrote Paul Proctor, Analyst, Gartner Inc. “This can be a challenge for IT leaders grounded in the technology-centric aspects of IT risk.”1

Today’s cyber-attacks have a direct impact on the bottom line, yet organizations lack the visibility to manage risk from the business perspective,” said Yuval Baron, Chairman, President and CEO, AlgoSec. “By integrating QualysGuard VM with our solution, we are changing this paradigm to provide application-centric vulnerability management, allowing organizations to manage security in the context of business and at the speed of business.”

In addition to aggregating vulnerability information per business application, AlgoSec provides a security rating across each physical or virtual server. As application connectivity flows change, vulnerability scores are automatically updated to ensure the most up-to-date view of risk to a data center application. Additionally, AlgoSec provides an immediate view of any server that has not been scanned for vulnerabilities within a specific interval.

Businesses today need the agility to continuously identify security issues and take the necessary steps to mitigate threats,” said Philippe Courtot, chairman and CEO for Qualys. “With QualysGuard integrated into the AlgoSec Security Management Suite, customers can gain better visibility into the configurations and vulnerabilities in their environments to take the appropriate remediation or mitigation actions.

The AlgoSec Security Management Suite delivers an automated and application-centric solution for managing complex policies across firewalls, routers, switches and web proxies to improve both security and business agility. The AlgoSec Suite bridges traditional gaps between security, network and application teams to simplify and automate data center and network operations. The AlgoSec Suite simplifies application delivery, streamlines change management, ensures continuous compliance, and delivers a tighter security policy that offers better protection against cyber-attacks.

The AlgoSec Suite, with application-centric vulnerability management is available immediately. The new solution will be demonstrated at RSA at AlgoSec’s booth #427.

To learn more about this solution, join us for a webcast on March 12 at 1pm ET on Managing Risk and Vulnerabilities in a Business Context.

Web App Instantly Estimates Operational and Financial Benefits from SANsymphony™-V Storage Virtualization

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.– DataCore, a leader in software-defined storage, today launched the industry’s first software-defined storage benefits calculator, as a part of its revamped website. By providing a few details about an organization’s storage environment, the benefits calculator instantly provides a personalized savings report, which details the benefits of using DataCore for storage virtualization, covering six categories:

  • Financial savings over five years
  • Reduce downtime in hours
  • Centralize management
  • Pool tiered resources
  • Reclaim free space (TBs)
  • Extend functional coverage

As the software-defined storage market continues to grow at a rapid pace, we felt there was a void in the industry in providing organizations with the tools necessary to realize the full benefits of storage virtualization,” said Paul Murphy, vice president of worldwide marketing, at DataCore. “The benefits calculator is designed to instantly show the real business impact storage virtualization can have on an organization, something our customers – across more than 10,000 sites – have experienced for the past 16 years.

DataCore partnered with Alinean – the leading ROI and TCO experts – to develop the software-defined storage benefits calculator. The calculator estimates savings based on: industry estimates for costs associated with downtime (planned and unplanned); the reduction of downtime customers experience after introducing DataCore; industry averages for the cost of storage and the staff to manage it; the improvement in the utilization of once stranded capacity is pooled, provisioned, cached and auto-tiered using DataCore; and the extended functional coverage that DataCore’s software-defined storage platform brings through infrastructure-wide services.

In addition to the benefits calculator, the DataCore website now features hundreds of real-world customer case studies from different industries and a number of new video testimonials demonstrating the real life benefits that customers are experiencing as a result of using DataCore. The most recent video testimonial highlights how Englewood Hospital reduced downtime, increased performance, improved IT responsiveness and decreased storage-related spending. The site also features a two minute video that exposes the secret that hardware vendors have been keeping from their customers for years – how software-defined storage will change the IT industry forever.

DreamHost Announces DreamSpeed CDN, High Speed Content Delivery Network

Powered by Fastly, fully integrated with DreamObjects

dream-host-cdn

LOS ANGELES, California—March 12th, 2014—DreamHost®, a global leader in Web hosting and cloud services for entrepreneurs and developers, today announced DreamSpeed CDN, a new, high speed content delivery network tightly integrated with DreamObjects – DreamHost’s eminently available and devastatingly affordable cloud storage service. Content for the web stored in DreamObjects can now be delivered to users faster than ever by a global network of hyper-fast servers.

DreamSpeed CDN is the perfect way to speed up a website or application. Whether it’s a small blog serving up cat pictures and infrequent musings on life, or a large media-heavy site loaded with 4K videos of your backyard wrestling federation’s greatest hits, DreamSpeed CDN can accelerate all web content indiscriminately and without prejudice. Enabling DreamSpeed CDN will also lighten the load on a user’s core web server, allowing it to focus on delivering only the dynamic parts of any given website or web application. Domain CNAME records are also supported, allowing accelerated content to be segregated and delivered from custom URLs.

Fast, Faster, Fastly

DreamSpeed CDN is powered by Fastly, the smartest CDN on the planet. Fastly makes quick work of serving static content, dynamic content, and APIs to users worldwide as easy as possible. Fastly built their CDN platform using state-of-the-art software and hardware including Varnish Control Language (VCL) and features all-SSD storage, multi-core CPUs, as well as 10Gb Ethernet. Fastly has points of presence at the center of the highest density Internet Exchange Points in cities around the world including (but not limited to) Los Angeles, New York, London, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Sydney. As Fastly expands its global network with the launch of additional global locations, DreamSpeed CDN users will experience unbridled speeds and terrifyingly raw power that few humans are exposed to throughout the course of their lifetimes.

DreamHost and Fastly are firm believers in using, contributing to, and promoting open source software. DreamObjects is built on Ceph, an open source software-defined storage system. Fastly is built on Varnish Cache, an open source web application accelerator. Some cities are built on rock and roll, but that’s not important right now.

DreamObjects Integration

DreamObjects users will see tight integration with DreamSpeed CDN. Individual buckets can have DreamSpeed CDN enabled with a single click, and custom URLs (using domain CNAME records) can be created just as easily.

Users can also purge stale content on demand in as little as *two seconds* with no limits on the number of purges that can be performed. Purge away! Dry-heave data to your heart’s content at no extra charge. We’ll handle the clean up.

DreamSpeed CDN is billed based on amount of data transferred and usage stats are displayed right alongside users’ DreamObjects stats. Billing charges for DreamSpeed CDN appear as a line item on a user’s DreamHost monthly bill and, much like DreamObjects, usage of DreamSpeed CDN does not require a user to maintain a supply of “fat stacks.”

Cost-Effective

DreamSpeed CDN users benefit from great pricing without commitments, minimum charges or per-request fees. Instant purges and domain aliases are standard features included at no extra charge. DreamSpeed CDN users only pay for outbound cached bandwidth as well as standard DreamObjects disk and bandwidth usage charges.

DreamSpeed CDN is billed per GB and by region. Pricing starts at $0.12/GB for the regions of North America and Europe and $0.19/GB for Australia, New Zealand and Asia-Pacific.

For more information about DreamSpeed CDN, please visit http://www.dreamhost.com/cloud/dreamspeedcdn

Simple and Easy to Use, with Powerful Performance

Powerful Quad-Core Processor and Graphics Engine

Fire TV features a world-class quad-core processor with 3x the processing power of Apple TV, Chromecast, or Roku 3, and a dedicated Adreno 320 graphics engine that processes 57 billion floating point instructions per second, for lightning-fast graphics and excellent fluidity. Fire TV comes with 2GB of memory, 4x the memory of Apple TV, Chromecast, or Roku 3, so content loads faster and games run smoother.

Streams in High Definition 1080p with Dolby Digital Plus Surround Sound

With dual-band, dual-antenna Wi-Fi, Fire TV streams in up to full-HD 1080p and supports HDMI and optical audio-out, enabling up to 7.1 Dolby Digital Plus surround sound.

Simple and Easy to Use

Fire TV comes automatically pre-registered so you can immediately get started. No complicated set-up, no hassle—just plug it in and start watching. All of your previously purchased movies and TV shows from Amazon, as well as personalized recommendations and your Watchlist, will be there waiting for you when you turn on Fire TV.

Designed to Disappear

Fire TV is designed to disappear. It is 0.7” thin, so it is easy to hide, and is silent even when running the most demanding applications.

Fire TV Remote

Fire TV’s remote is small, simple, and intuitive, with familiar controls. Search, browse, play, pause, and add titles to your Watchlist with ease. The Fire TV remote uses Bluetooth so there is no “line of sight” required, which means no reaching or struggling to aim your signal at a tiny target—store your Fire TV in a cabinet or behind the TV.

Voice Search that Actually Works

Gone are the days of searching for a movie or TV show by left-left-down-right-ing through an on-screen alphabet grid using your remote. Simply speak the name of a movie, TV show, actor, director, genre, app, or game into the remote, and the results will appear instantly. Voice search leverages the search data and expertise of Amazon.com and IMDb, and is optimized to understand Amazon’s video, app, and game catalog.

The Best Video Experience

Movies and TV Shows from Netflix, Prime Instant Video, Hulu Plus, and More

Fire TV comes with instant access to all of the most popular subscription video services, including Netflix, Prime Instant Video, Hulu Plus, WatchESPN, VEVO, SHOWTIME, Crackle, YouTube, and more, with additional services like WWE Network, MLB.TV, WATCH Disney Channel, WATCH ABC, and Twitch coming soon.

Prime Instant Video, with Exclusives and Original Shows

Fire TV is seamlessly integrated with Prime Instant Video, Amazon’s subscription streaming service. With tens of thousands of movies and TV episodes, Prime Instant Video is the exclusive premium subscription streaming home for thousands of hours of video, including shows like Downton Abbey, The Americans, Workaholics, Justified, 24, Hannibal, Dora the Explorer, SpongeBob, and more. Prime Instant Video also includes shows from Amazon Studios, the original TV production arm of Amazon, such as Alpha House from Pulitzer-Prize winner Garry Trudeau and starring John Goodman, which debuted last year and quickly became the most watched show on Amazon since its release. Alpha House is now in production for its second season, and Amazon recently greenlighted six new shows, including The After, Bosch, Mozart in the Jungle, and Transparent, which will be available starting later this year.

The Largest Selection of Videos for Rent or Purchase

Rent or purchase over 200,000 movies and TV episodes from Amazon Instant Video, which has the world’s largest selection of videos to rent or buy, including new releases and blockbusters. Amazon is the only nationwide video service that offers rental and purchase, as well as a subscription streaming service, so you can find everything you want in one place—catch up on past seasons of popular TV shows with Prime Instant Video before purchasing the most recent episode of the show as it’s released.

Find the Lowest Price—Even if it’s Not from Amazon

Just like on Amazon.com, Fire TV integrates viewing options on a single page so you can always choose the lowest price. This is available starting with Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, and Prime Instant Video, and will expand to other content providers so you’ll see all of your options in one place.

ASAP

You shouldn’t have to wait 10 seconds for a video to buffer after you press “Play”—it should start immediately. Based on your Watchlist and recommendations, the new ASAP (Advanced Streaming and Prediction) feature predicts which movies and TV episodes you’ll want to watch and prepares them for playback before you even hit play. This feature is smart—it is personalized based on your viewing habits and adapts as those habits change. The caching predictions get better over time, so ASAP will continuously improve as you use Fire TV.

Fling TV Shows and Movies with Second Screen

Fling Amazon TV shows and movies from your phone or tablet to your Fire TV using Second Screen. This turns your TV into the primary screen and frees up your phone or tablet to provide playback controls, a customized display for X-Ray, or simply a place to email, browse the web, and more, while you watch a movie. Second Screen is available on Kindle Fire HDX and will be available later this year from your iPhone or iPad. You can also wirelessly mirror your tablet display to your Fire TV with Kindle Fire, as well as other Miracast-enabled phones or tablets starting later this year. Fire TV supports standards like DIAL, so app developers can enable multi-screen experiences based on open technologies.

X-Ray for Movies and TV Shows, Powered by IMDb

Using Second Screen on your Fire HDX and later this year on your iPhone or iPad, you can see X-Ray information as your movie or TV show plays on Fire TV. With X-Ray you can see information about cast and crew, the names of songs as they play, as well as a list of all music in the movie or TV show, trivia items in context with the action on the screen, and character backstories so you can easily remind yourself of the character’s history. X-Ray is exclusive to Amazon and is powered by IMDb.

Amazon FreeTime—Revolutionary Parental Controls

Now you don’t have to worry about what your kids are watching on the TV—with FreeTime, a parent creates profiles for each child and selects the content they can see. Parents can create time limits based on type of content or time of day. When in FreeTime, the background color and fonts change to a kid-friendly design. Kids only see titles that have been selected by their parents for them, and those who can’t yet read can navigate visually to content based on favorite characters or topics—for example “Dora the Explorer,” “Princesses,” or “Thomas and Friends.” Parents who have already set up profiles and approved content on Kindle Fire tablets will find the settings are automatically synchronized on Fire TV, making it simple and seamless to get started.

Customers who subscribe to FreeTime Unlimited—Amazon’s all-you-can-eat content subscription designed just for kids ages 3 to 8—will get unlimited access to thousands of movies and TV shows. FreeTime Unlimited is available for Prime members to enjoy for a monthly price of $2.99 per child or $6.99 per family. Customers who are not yet Prime members can subscribe to FreeTime Unlimited for a monthly price of $4.99 per child or $9.99 per family. Amazon FreeTime and FreeTime Unlimited will be available on Fire TV starting next month.

Your Photos on the Big Screen

Fire TV makes it easy to view your photos and personal videos on your TV. You can set up and play slide shows, find specific photos, and choose your favorite album for the screen-saver on Fire TV. Photos or videos you take on your phone or tablet can be automatically uploaded to Amazon Cloud Drive, so they appear on your Fire TV within seconds.

Music in Your Living Room

Music from Pandora, Amazon MP3, iHeartRadio, and More

With Fire TV, you can listen to music from popular streaming services like Pandora, iHeartRadio, and TuneIn, and watch music videos from VEVO. Starting next month, you can also listen to your full collection of music through Amazon Cloud Player. Simply upload your music or purchase from Amazon and it will be stored automatically in your Cloud Player and available on Fire TV as well as on your phone or tablet.

X-Ray for Music

Lyrics display and scroll line-by-line automatically as the song plays, so you can follow along with songs. X-Ray for Music will be available starting next month.

Bonus—Great Games at Low Prices

Games from Top Developers

Amazon worked with game developers like EA, Disney, Gameloft, Ubisoft, Telltale, Mojang, 2K, and Sega to bring their games to Fire TV. Games available starting today include customer favorites like Minecraft, Monsters University, The Game of Life, The Walking Dead, NBA2K14, Asphalt 8, Riptide GP2, Despicable Me: Minion Rush, and more. Over 100 games are available starting today and optimized for Fire TV, with thousands of additional games coming next month with the Fire TV app, which brings controls for touch-enabled games. These are great games for such a small box and at such surprisingly low prices—the average price of paid games is $1.85.

Fire TV also comes with access to Sev Zero, a new game built exclusively for Fire TV by Amazon Game Studios. Sev Zero is $6.99 and is available for free when you purchase the Fire game controller. Learn more: www.amazon.com/pr/SevZero.

Fire TV runs the latest version of Fire OS “Mojito,” which is based on Android, so it’s simple for developers to port their services and games over to Fire TV.

Choose How to Play—Remote, Game Controller, or App

In addition to using the Fire TV remote and the Fire TV app available starting next month, you can also choose the Amazon Fire game controller, which enables more high-intensity and complex gaming with dual analog sticks and a complete assortment of controls. Simple and comfortable to use for hours, the Fire game controller pairs with Fire TV via Bluetooth. The Fire game controller also intelligently manages power by automatically going to sleep when not in use, and waking at a touch of a button, so you get up to 55 hours of gaming on a pair of AA batteries. You can pair multiple game controllers with a Fire TV so the whole family can play together in the same room. The integrated GameCircle button gives you instant access to leaderboards, achievements and friends with a simple touch of a button from any GameCircle enabled game. The Fire game controller can also be used as a remote, with fast forward, rewind, play and pause, so you can control all your movies and music on Fire TV. The Fire game controller is available today for $39.99, and comes with a free copy of Sev Zero and 1,000 Amazon Coins (a $10 value) for purchasing games.

The Features You Expect from Amazon

Fire TV is not a gadget—it’s a seamlessly integrated service that brings together the features customers expect from Amazon, including:

  • Whispersync—Amazon’s Whispersync technology saves and synchronizes your video and music library across all of your devices. Verizon Launches New Cloud Interconnectivity Software

terremark

Verizon has found a niche in the cloud market: businesses who manage operations on multiple cloud servers.  Working on different clouds simultaneously can be a confusing and frustrating endeavor, but Verizon is offering a solution to this difficult process with the launch of its Secure Cloud Interconnect service (SCI).

With SCI, businesses will be able to connect to multiple cloud services, including Verizon Terremark, Microsoft Azure, and private cloud servers in the 15 Equinix data centers spread across the globe. More cloud service providers will be added to this network as the year progresses.

Michael Palmer, Vice President of Product Development for Verizon, offered some comments on the new product:

With Secure Cloud Interconnect, Verizon is removing the barriers for enterprise cloud adoption. The reality is that many organizations today use multiple clouds to meet their business and technical objectives, but there was no easy way to manage this environment until now.

Our new offering uniquely gives enterprises everything they require in a multi-cloud environment — security, private connectivity, performance, simplicity and efficiency. SCI will enable a wide range of applications and use cases for organizations.”

This sort of connection across multiple clouds using private IPs isn’t particularly new or innovative. Big companies like AT&T, and smaller ones, like Tw Telecom and Level 3 Communications, all offer services similar to SCI. But this is more than just a copycat product.

Brian Washburn, Service Director at Current Analysis, offers some insight on what it is that sets SCI apart from the competition:

Other folks have solved the unlimited bursting into the data center, but they don’t have the bandwidth-on-demand that Verizon is including. Tw Telecom has the on-demand bandwidth and the secure connection to third-party data centers, but Verizon has the potential for end-to-end service that others don’t have yet. That can be a competitive advantage for them.”

Verizon is already a leader in wireless communications, operating the United States’ most popular wireless network, with over 100 million users nationwide. This shift to providing more cloud-based services signals that Verizon is aware of the direction in which the future of communications is heading, and they are ready and able to follow.

Equinix Launches Cloud Exchange to Unlock Full Potential of Cloud Computing

Next-generation interconnection solution improves connectivity options for cloud buyers and service providers by making multi-cloud, multi-network access a reality

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., April 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX), the global interconnection and data center company, today announced the launch of the Equinix Cloud Exchange, an advanced interconnection solution that enables seamless, on-demand and direct access to multiple clouds and multiple networks across the globe. By bringing together cloud service providers with cloud consumers and enabling them to establish private, high-performance connections, the Equinix Cloud Exchange gives enterprises direct access to the services they need to build sophisticated hybrid cloud solutions inside Equinix International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data centers.

EQUINIX LOGO

Until now, companies concerned about relying on the open Internet for mission-critical business did not have a secure, reliable and scalable connectivity solution for a multi-cloud environment. By eliminating the bottlenecks associated with traditional cloud access across the public Internet, the Equinix Cloud Exchange provides a secure path for businesses to access cloud resources at much higher throughput. In fact, tests run in the Equinix Solution Validation Center showed increased throughput of 147 percent when connecting directly to the cloud as compared to public Internet connections.

Systems integrators, IT services companies, SaaS and IaaS providers, networks and cloud enablers can all leverage the Equinix Cloud Exchange to rapidly advance their cloud computing agendas, scale their businesses globally and speed their time to market. At the same time, enterprises can achieve significant benefits by connecting through the Equinix Cloud Exchange, including increasing the privacy, performance and reliability of cloud service connections.

Businesses can join the Equinix Cloud Exchange in 13 markets globally – Silicon Valley, Washington D.C., New York, Toronto, Seattle, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago, London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Paris – with expansion planned to a total of 19 markets by the end of 2014. Today customers can connect to Microsoft Azure ExpressRoute in Silicon Valley, Washington, D.C. and London with planned expansions into 13 additional markets by the end of 2014.

Customers can also access Amazon Web Services via the Equinix Cloud Exchange in Silicon Valley, Washington, D.C. and London. In addition, Equinix is working with other key cloud and network service providers to provide access to their services via the Cloud Exchange.

Next-Generation Interconnection Capabilities Enable High-Performance Multi-Cloud Environment

Representing an industry first, the Equinix Cloud Exchange will combine the automated interconnection of cloud, network and managed service providers with advanced service orchestration, providing enterprises with simple, scalable, direct access to the multiple cloud services they need to build highly flexible hybrid cloud solutions.

Equinix’s Cloud Exchange Portal and APIs simplify the process of managing connections to multiple cloud services. Businesses can use the Portal and APIs to allocate, monitor and provision virtual circuits in near real-time with the provisioning of those circuits automated end-to-end from the Cloud Exchange to the service provider. This breakthrough capability provides faster performance, better reliability, increased security, and quicker and easier deployment of cloud applications, bringing significant benefits to the broad community of industry participants looking to realize the benefits of cloud computing.

As an increasing number of enterprises move to the cloud, they require a new level of interconnectivity to access multiple clouds, across multiple sites, from a broad range of networks,” said Tony Bishop, chief strategy officer at The 451 Group. “With its global datacenter footprint and extensive ecosystem of network and cloud service providers, the Equinix Cloud Exchange addresses many of the most pressing challenges holding corporate users back from relying on the cloud for mission-critical business including latency, security and performance issues.

Interconnection Track Record Positions Equinix to Solve Pressing Cloud Connectivity Challenges

Equinix earned a position as the world’s leading data center and interconnection company by enabling the growth of the most influential and highly interconnected business ecosystems in the IT industry. This 15-year track record has made the company the trusted home to the widest range of networks, cloud providers and prospective cloud services customers in the world.

Just as it was with the Internet, the key to realizing the business benefits of the cloud is how well connected it is,” said Ihab Tarazi, chief technology officer at Equinix. “But companies are recognizing that the Internet has security and performance limitations, given that it is inherently open and shared publicly. By utilizing direct access via the Equinix Cloud Exchange, businesses no longer have to compromise on these essential requirements when accessing cloud providers.”

Today over 4,500 customers, including 450 cloud service providers and 975 networks, are deployed within Equinix’s 100+ global data centers, which are located in close proximity to hundreds of thousands of enterprises. With the introduction of Cloud Exchange, Equinix is building upon its successful heritage and leveraging the power of interconnection to bring cloud buyers and providers together in new ways to realize the benefits of cloud computing.

EMC Rolls Out Breakthrough Hybrid Cloud Innovations At EMC World 2014

LAS VEGASMay 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — EMC World 2014

At EMC World 2014, EMC Corporation today announced major new Software-Defined Storage products and technologies that enable the blended benefits of a public and private cloud, delivering Service Providers and customers, in any industry and of any size, with the efficiency, agility, security and control of a hybrid cloud.

emc

The 3rd Platform of IT is based on the mega trends of cloud, mobile, social and Big Data and is creating a new world of opportunity — and competitive threat — for businesses in every industry. New mobile applications are delivering unique and frictionless experiences for customers both to interact and transact. These applications serve hundreds to millions of users and generate 1000x the amount of information as their predecessors.  This is leading to organizations redefining themselves with software and transforming data centers into fully virtualized and automated private clouds, while also running certain applications in a public cloud. When combined together, they form a hybrid cloud—where almost all applications will live to make IT more efficient and agile and cost-effective. Suggesting a significant move toward adoption of a hybrid cloud model, last week the Economist Intelligence Unit published a report which found that 63% of business executives plan to increase reliance on corporate IT to deliver both internal and external IT resources.

To help customers navigate arguably the biggest transformational shift the IT industry has ever seen, EMC is delivering new Software-Defined Storage products to help organizations manage their traditional enterprise applications; deploy next-generation applications faster, with new levels of efficiency and speed; and convert new sources of data insight into new revenue streams.

New Product Highlights

  • New EMC® Elastic Cloud Storage (ECS) Appliance (formerly known as “Project Nile”) is a breakthrough hyperscale cloud storage infrastructure that redefines the economic benefits of cloud storage for service providers and customers of any size, in any industry. ECS Appliance delivers the ease-of-use, agility and cost benefits of public cloud, with the control and security of an on-premise private cloud. The ECS Appliance offers up to 28% lower TCO than public cloud alternatives from Amazon and Google. (News release here)
  • New version of the EMC ViPR™ Software-Defined Storage Platform – EMC ViPR 2.0 –delivers new capabilities that simplify the management of both existing and new storage infrastructures, and provides new data services to underpin next-generation applications and Big Data analytics. ViPR 2.0 builds a bridge to the 3rd Platform of IT by enabling customers to manage their storage infrastructure in a consistent, fully automated way. ViPR also plugs into higher-level management and orchestration tools from VMware, OpenStack and Microsoft so storage can be a part of broader data center workflows. ViPR 2.0 adds new block data Services and new geographic replication and distribution. It also provides support for commodity drives and additional 3rd-party arrays through OpenStack. (News release here)
  • The new EMC Data Domain® DD2200 delivers a protection storage system with enterprise-class benefits that’s been specifically designed, priced and optimized for midmarket customers.  By delivering the DD2200 through EMC’s global network of channel partners, EMC is helping to ensure successful implementations for its midmarket customers, who can also implement it via new VSPEX® solutions. (EMC Pulse blog)
  • Last week EMC introduced new products and capabilities to the industry-leading VNX® Family of hybrid storage solutions, including a new entry-level VNXe3200 storage array which is 3X more efficient than previous VNXe® solutions, and is based on the VNX Series (launched in September 2013). EMC also announced ‘Project Liberty’, a Software-Defined VNX that leverages the functionality and user experience of VNX, while delivering new levels of freedom to deploy applications with cloud-like agility in a software-defined data center. EMC also added EMC D@RE (Data-At-Rest-Encryption) to the VNX Series, providing the capability to encrypt data written to disk and eliminate data access from unauthorized drive removal.  (News release here)

Executive Quote:

David Goulden, CEO, EMC Information Infrastructure

The industry is navigating the single-most transformative IT shift ever. It’s driven by billions of devices, billions of users and millions of applications. Not a single industry or organization is immune to this sweeping change. The priority for customers today is to drive competitive advantage by harnessing the forces of mobile, social, cloud and Big Data, while maximizing existing investments that support traditional enterprise workloads. The Hybrid cloud model allows customers to run applications easily and cost-effectively inside or outside of their data centers, and today’s Software-Defined products make this possible.”

RapidMiner Releases New PaaS Offeringrapidminer-logo-retina

RapidMiner, one of the predictive analytics market leaders, has today announced the release of a Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) version of its RapidMiner Server solution. The company already boasts more than 35,000 deployments worldwide, including clients as diverse as Lufthansa, PayPal, Pepsi, and Volkswagen; they hope this latest release will help increase their market share further.

RapidMiner Server is widely considered to be one of the most powerful, comprehensive, and flexible data analysis solutions available. It uses the core RapidMiner Studio engine to provide powerful remote processing, an accessible web interface, and innovative design and collaboration options. It allows to users to run processes on enterprise hardware, schedule and run analyfeature_extensionssis, and get real-time results from anywhere.

The software was a surprise frontrunner in Gartner’s ‘Advanced Analytics Platforms Magic Quadrant’. Released in February, it ranked alongside SAS, IBM and Knime in the ‘Leaders’ quadrant. It is good timing from RapidMiner’s point of view, with Gartner estimating that advanced analytics is now a $2 billion market that spans a broad array of industries globally. The research firm predicts business intelligence and analytics will remain a top focus for Chief Information Officers until at least 2017.

RapidMiner already includes a vast number of methods for data integration, data transformation, data modelling, and data visualisation — with the ability to access data sources such as Excel, Access, Oracle, IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL, Sybase, Ingres, MySQL, Postgres, SPSS, dBase, and Text files. Additional benefits of the new RapidMiner Server PaaS include a deployment time that can be measured in minutes, a high-throughput access to Amazon Relational Database Service, and programmable options such as scheduling, triggers and APIs.

Clients will also benefit from a cost reduction thanks to the removal of the need to develop server management expertise internally; the new RapidMiner Server PaaS is managed by a team of RapidMiner experts who are responsible for all aspects of operating the software, including installations, configurations, backups, maintenance, monitoring, and updates.

RapidMiner offer multiple pricing options. Their free offering only includes 1 GB of RAM, is only compatible with CSV and Excel file-based data sources, and does not support any database systems. The package they recommend to most users is the ‘Professional’ bundle. This includes 8 GB of RAM, supports all common types of file-based data, and is compatible with all database systems. It costs $9,999 per year.

The company hopes that the release of their PaaS offering will help eliminate the need for organisations to dedicate internal resources to purchasing, installing and managing hardware and software, and instead they can now focus on getting the most out of their data.

Secure data center and managed services allow support for prestigious Institute engaged in the fight against infectious diseases

carpathia_hosting_logo

Dulles, Va. – May 21, 2014 – Carpathia, a trusted cloud operator and leading provider of compliant cloud services and managed hosting, announced that the Duke Human Vaccine Institute (DHVI), a leader in the fight against major infectious diseases, has selected Carpathia to design, deploy, manage and back-up the expansion of its Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) compliant computing infrastructure.

For over two decades, the DHVI has been at the forefront of the battle against AIDS and the quest for HIV and other infectious disease vaccines. As part of its research mission, DHVI directs and manages External Quality Assurance (EQA) programs through its Immunology and Virology Quality Assessment Center (IVQAC). This center supports the development, implementation and oversight of external quality assurance programs that monitor laboratories involved in HIV/AIDS research and vaccine trials around the world. In addition, the center helps domestic and international immunologists evaluate and enhance the integrity and comparability of immunological laboratory determinations performed on patients enrolled in therapeutic, vaccine and prevention investigations. In order to support these efforts, DHVI needs to continue to comply with strict NIST, HIPAA and FISMA data protection and integrity standards.

Our IT mission is to support the External Quality Assurance program’s information integrity and security so that the research efforts, effectiveness and productivity of our investigators are maximized,” said Paul Debien, Director, Information Services, DHVI. “Carpathia, in offering a custom infrastructure, supported by their premier secure data center, plays an integral role in ensuring we adhere to the stringent security and compliance requirements essential for our work.”

Carpathia’s team of experts and engineers worked closely with DHVI to evaluate application, user and security needs and then architect a custom solution designed to meet the NIST and HIPAA compliance requirements required to support the EQA programs. In addition to providing managed services, the DHVI infrastructure is supported by the Carpathia IBX Vault, one of the industry’s most advanced data centers built from the ground up to meet a superset of federal compliance and security mandates.

A healthy computing infrastructure isn’t possible until certain security and compliance standards have been met,” said Stu Fleagle, Vice President Carpathia Government Solutions. “For an organization like DHVI, which faces strict requirements and unique challenges, our extensive experience and ability to draw up a custom plan are just what the doctor ordered.”

About Carpathia
